On one of the last remaining summer evenings of the year, students, parents and children of all ages gathered at Wilken’s turf for a memorable event. The sky turned from blue to purple as the sun set and families filtering in laid down blankets in a checkerboard pattern across the field. Eager moviegoers passed underneath the string of lights adorning the entrance, admired the extensive array of baked goods and picked a spot to settle in for a screening of a heartwarming Pixar film.
On Wednesday, September 20, the MLHS Key Club hosted a movie night fundraiser showing the winner of the 2015 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film, Big Hero 6. The film follows protagonist Hiro, his robot companion, Baymax, and other friends on their adventure to save the city of San Fransokyo from destruction by a mysterious evil villain. The movie is thrilling, yet also very touching and even those with a cold exterior must admit to feeling a pull on the heartstrings.
The scene on the turf was already buzzing with energy hours before the event started as dedicated key clubber volunteers arrived and helped set up the screen, projector, lights, tables, assortment of treats and, not to be forgotten, the cotton candy machine. Students finished shuffling tables, laying out food and hanging up signs by the time audience members began trickling in. Younger children arrived eager to see the dramatic plot twists involving Hiro and Baymax, while older students strolled in excited for a relaxed break from studying. Melissa Mao, MLHS junior, comments, “It was a really fun way to destress with friends while supporting a worthy cause.”
The delicious brownies, cookies, cupcakes, chocolate covered pretzels and more, prepared by key club volunteers, were tremendously popular with students (and parents) of all ages. And, of course, the alluring smell of cotton candy is irresistible to all but those with the most unwavering will of mind.
The event raised over $500 to be donated to help local families in need at the food banks of New Jersey. This was Key Club’s first event of the year to raise money for their 2017 district charity of food banks.
The organization of the event involved months of planning and could not have been achieved without the help of the school staff and Key Club’s wonderful volunteers. A special thanks to Key Club advisors Mrs. Delgado and Mrs. Lewandowski, Mr. Davies, Mr. Downes, Mr. Prusina, chaperones Mr. Merrit, Ms. Grasso and Mr. McGrath, and the maintenance crew for helping to create a marvelous night.
