At the Game
On Friday evening, students across Mountain Lakes and Boonton Township dug through their closets for black-on-black attire before heading over to watch some high school football. The homecoming game started at 7:30, and Laker Nation was going for a “blackout.” While the game itself may have been disappointing, nothing could stop the students from cheering as the 2017 Homecoming Court walked onto the turf at halftime.
The freshman were represented by Thomas Aiello and Ashley Chen, the sophomores by Dillyn Minson and Patipat Luangwirun, and the juniors by Halle Korman, Holley Petrie, and Spencer Gillie. The eight senior representatives were George Scherger, Adam Shmanske, Nick Wexler, and Austin Whiteman, as well as Nina Calderone, Corley Collins, Isabella Gengaro, and Ishani Mehta. As they made the trek down the side of the turf, students standing behind the fence clapped and shouted words of encouragement.
At the Dance
The main event, of course, was on Saturday. By 7:30, the line extended from the gym atrium door onto the sidewalk outside. Inside, students walked between the pitch-black gym and the cafeteria. It was immediately apparent how much hard work the SGA had put into the decorations with everything dressed up to look much fancier than usual.
In the cafeteria, students gathered in front of the back wall, where blue and white wallpaper made an excellent photo background. Visibly sweaty and exhausted, dancers took breaks to get SGA-provided pizza and water. Almost all the tables were filled, either with kids eating or talking to their friends—with conversation impossible in the gym, where the music was loud and kids were singing along to the bass-heavy pop songs.
At 9:45, all the students headed to the gym to watch their Homecoming King and Queen crowned. A huge circle formed in the gym, and a single light pointed at the middle. The energy in the room vibrated in the hearts of the hopeful teenage audience and reverberated against the walls of the dimly lit room.
The excitement of the students emitted from the whispers they exchanged with their friends and acquaintances alike. Although initially buzzing with volume, the crowd was quick to silence at the request of our school president. All attention was centered upon the well-lit circle, which held Matt Riccardi, a microphone, and the answer to who would be homecoming king and queen.
With unwavering certainty, President Matt Riccardi announced the homecoming king and queen to be Adam Shmanske and Nina Calderone. The winners, their smiles of shock prominent on their faces, were quickly met with hugs and words of congratulations from their friends and from the school.
Senior Darryl Chance finished the resounding announcement with his impressive dance moves, which were greeted with equal enthusiasm and cheer. No matter the perspective, Mountain Lakes High School’s Homecoming was definitely a memorable celebration of the students’ love for the school and their friends!
