May is a big month for the world of musical theater, with many award nominations coming out left and right. Possibly the most notorious are the Tony Awards. On Tuesday, April 30th, Renee Elise Goldsbury (well-known as Angelica Schuyler in the original cast of Hamilton) and Jesse Tyler Ferguson (well-known from Modern Family) announced the 132 nominations across all 26 categories. While there are way too many to go through in one article, I am going to review my personal favorite categories of the 2024 Tony nominations, and my predictions for which will win.

  1. Best Musical
  • Hell’s Kitchen (Alicia Keys)
  • Illinoise (Justin Peck & Jackie Sibblies Drury)
  • The Outsiders (Jamestown Revival)
  • Water For Elephants (PigPen Theatre Co)
  • Suffs (Shaina Taub)

From Water For Elephants’ talented acrobatics, Suffs’ powerful cast, The Outsider’s iconic story, Hell’s Kitchen’s incredible music, and the creative dancing in Illinois, this category proves to be extremely tough (as per usual). My bias wants Suffs to win, but I see this award going to Illinois or The Outsiders.

  1. Best Revival of a Musical
  • Cabaret at The Kit Kat Club
  • Gutenberg! The Musical!
  • Merrily We Roll Along
  • The Who’s Tommy

This category is hard for me to give an educated opinion on since I’ve only seen 1 out of 4 of these shows (Merrily). While Merrily has a star-studded cast, Gutenberg has special guests every night, and The Who’s Tommy is iconic. Additionally, Cabaret is overall an incredible musical and the way they redid the entire August Wilson theater to fit the show is absolutely stunning and perfectly on theme. I would love to see Cabaret win this category.

  1. Best Original Score (MUSIC AND/OR LYRICS) Written for Theater
  • Days of Wine and Roses (Adam Guettel)
  • Here Lies Love (David Byrne)
  • The Outsiders (Jamestown Revival (Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance) and Justin Levine)
  • Stereophonic (Will Butler)
  • Suffs (Shaina Taub)

Out of sheer opinion, I would love Suffs to win this category, but I think this award will go to either The Outsiders or Stereophonic.

Of course, the Tony Awards offers many more nominations, but there are too many categories to go over, let alone pick a winner. These are the top categories that I am waiting to see on June 16th, and during the wait, you can discover more shows, categories, and people involved here!
