Chances are, you’ve had your fair share of internet cat memes. Whether that be because your friend shares one every 0.3 seconds, maybe you’ve seen Mr. Hoffman’s cat memes during class, or even when you are scrolling social media, it’s undeniable that cat memes are popular in today’s world.
“Cat” egorically, in just 2023, there were more than 6.5 billion cat pictures on the internet. Each JPEG is sized from 3.5 MB to 7MB… (Don’t worry about the math, you get the point). More than 2 million cat videos were posted on YouTube in 2014 alone, and now TikTok and other platforms are exploding with cat content as well.
Now, if you think it’s just cat owners recording their adorable pets, you’d be wrong. Cats have started to create their own content. The New York Times reports that high – resolution collar cameras allow cats to broadcast their adventures from their point of view: Check out Mr. Kitters and his pals, who currently have 2.8 M followers on Instagram (Quite the famous paw, don’t you say?).
But cat memes didn’t just become popular in recent years. The first postcards were functionally similar to today’s social media, and cat owners did not hesitate to share pictures of their funny cats. Stamps often featured cats, with pictures of cats incorporated in the postcard as well. Even Monarchs and socialites, including Queen Victoria, were famous cat enjoyers.
It doesn’t stop there, either. Those cat postcards were also part of Women’s Suffrage Movements as well. Herr says stickers feature Suffrage cats that were made, being the most in-demand stickers on the Johns Hopkins campus, having students stick them on their water bottles and computers.
Now, with artificial intelligence (AI) becoming more and more popular, generative AI can help with the creation of images, memes, content, and GIFS (according to the creator of GIFs himself, it’s pronounced “JIF” not “GIF). You can even check out CATGPT; ask it any question and, without fail, it will meow back. Not the MOST productive conversation, but it still IS a conversation. Also, you can ask GPT-Furr to explain how cats use quantum mechanics in hunting, and it generates a response in a sassy manner. Try it out!
So, cat memes have clawed their way into the hearts of internet users everywhere, proving that the digital age truly belongs to our feline overlords. So, next time, when you find yourself lost in an endless loop of cat memes or videos, just remember: you’re simply paying homage to the internet’s true rulers—one meme at a time. Isn’t it Meowvelous?
