Without a doubt, MLHS’s girls’ swim team deserves major props for their impressive dedication. Why? Because they’re constantly having to wash the chlorine out of their hair. Probably more notably, though, our girls’ team has ranked #1 in the NJSIAA North Jersey Championship!
It all happened this February, at the Passaic County Technical Institute, amidst the whistles, the cheering crowd members, and that inescapable chemical *pool smell*. In an exciting meet, the MLGS team claimed the title of State Champs when they beat Kinnelon with a score of 94-76.
“The win was such a rush of emotion–mostly excitement and happiness,” says three-year swim team veteran Rachel Hercek (‘19). “We were all glad to keep the state champs title for a third year, and especially the seniors were happy to end their season on such a great win.”
Three years!
MLHS’s girl swim team has been the reigning champion of all North Jersey swim teams for three consecutive years, now. It’s safe to say that the head coach, Mr. Leshnower, is doing something right.
Of course, it all comes down to the team, as well. Katie Kiely and Sarah Scelsa held the positions of 2018 team captains, making their last year of MLHS count with their two other senior teammates, Julia Bay and Laura Burkly. If one thing’s for sure, it’s that the victorious MLGS truly benefits from the strong, determined girls behind it.
Serving as another representation of this admirable cast of Lakers, the team’s own Coco Fraser (‘20) happened to break two school records in this final meet. Coco took first place in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.56. Then, alongside her relay team of Cameron Carazza (‘19), Katie Kiely (‘18), and Marin Leshnower (‘19), Coco claimed her second school record in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:04:33.
MLGS is simply built on winners, as Cameron Carrazza, Katie Kiely, Cat Tamarelli (‘20), and Grace Tarantola (‘19) all swam into first place for their races, as well. With this groundbreaking win of the Public ‘C’ Tournament, the girls ended the year with a total of 13 wins and 2 losses.
On reflection of the season, Julia Matalon (‘19) said, “I️ was very proud to be a part of the girls’ third consecutive win this year. Everyone worked incredibly hard throughout the season and, in the end, it all paid off.”
To the girls of MLGS, take Dory’s advice and “just keep swimming” because clearly you’re doing something right! MLHS is proud to be represented by your hard work!
