The Science of Happiness
“In scientific literature, happiness is referred to as hedonia (Ryan & Deci, 2001), the presence of positive emotions and the absence of negative emotions.” Katherine Nelson-Coffery explores the science of happiness in her article The Science of Happiness in Positive Psychology 101. Scientists have broken down the biological factors that are related to happiness into five different categories: genetic, brain and neurotransmitters, endocrinology and hormones, physical health, and morphology and physical attractiveness. Learn more here.

Its effects can decrease motivation thus affecting school performance, social withdrawal, increase in anxiety and in some severe cases, suicidal thoughts and behaviors.
