Introduction
The Premier League, known affectionately by most as simply the “prem,” offers a roller coaster of emotions to everyone watching. Fairy tale victories, shows of strength, and star players are created almost every year.
This year is no different: from Aston Villa’s crazy run to the top to Arsenal’s dominating performances, one thing is certain: any soccer (“football,” as it is called in England) fan should not overlook this year’s Premier League.
Arsenal
No team has yet to get the best of Arsenal. Their roster includes the ever-tenacious Kai Havertz, a German striker. He was why Arsenal rose to a 5-0 victory against Chelsea. Combined with the forces of Rice, Saka, Ødegaard, and Raya (Goalkeeper), they will easily advance to the Champions League, an even more prestigious European tournament. Their standings? First place with a 77-point total.
Man City
Manchester City. As an avid soccer player myself, I cannot understand why this team is not number one. Their roster is formidable: Erling Haaland, KDB, Foden, Álvarez, Silva, Ederson (Goalkeeper), and Ruben Dias.
Their gameplay is electrifying. Erling Haaland just seems to appear in front of the goal for an easy tap-in. Kevin De Bruyne’s vision is unmatched, finding his teammates through walls of opposing players. The control and chemistry these players have on the field are the best we have ever seen, bar none (except maybe prime Barcelona). Unfortunately, they are in second with a deficit of just one point. Nonetheless, they will be advancing to the Champions League as well, as expected.
Aston Villa
This is the fairytale story, or dark horse, that appears in every soccer tournament to date. They fly under the radar, sneaking and slithering through the grasp of critics until they appear at the top, stunning everyone. And it was not because of luck. Their roster includes Ollie Watkins and Emiliano Martinez. Martinez, the Argentine goalkeeper, arguably gifted Lionel Messi his first-ever World Cup with a mind-boggling save with his calf. Ollie Watkins’s heroics in every match helped Aston Villa shoot to the top. And guess what? They won on a 2-0 against Arsenal, the number one seed. If they keep this up, they will squeak past Tottenham to a Champions League qualification.
Chelsea
Look: to put it simply, Chelsea F.C. is doing terribly this season. A soccer superpower should not be in 9th place, especially not behind Man U. Why are they this bad? Management. The team was built in a way that supported any team play or squad chemistry quickly. When Raheem Sterling runs with his back arched like a chicken, we know something is wrong. Combined with the fact that many star players are injured, it is not shaping up to be an excellent season for Chelsea. Better luck next year, I guess.
Even for non-soccer fans, the Premier League is not something to miss. Tune in and try to catch an exciting game! The tournament awaits.
