One weekend in November, I went to go see DreamWorks Animation’s new movie, Trolls, at the Morristown AMC movie theater. I walked in expecting it to be much like other children’s movies, all cute and positive, but it surprised me with elements of sadness and sheer terror.

Here’s the general overview. Poppy, the female protagonist who is always happy, and Branch, the male protagonist who is always sad and sappy, set out on a life threatening journey in hopes of finding Poppy’s dear friends and family, who she cares very much about. But halfway through the movie, Poppy realizes that instead of helping the situation, she made it worse! In the end, though, everything turns out all right, because the trolls find a way to save everyone, even the bad guys.

I think this movie would be good to see with young children, or if you just want to see a happy ending, but overall, it was just okay.

The elements of sheer terror and sadness that I felt mostly came from the fact that the directors made a horrible decision in choosing to make this film. The same kind of movie has been made at least once every year since like 1937, and the children sitting behind me were snickering the entire time, which proves that even they knew it was a joke. I mean, the songs were kinda catchy, but the whole soundtrack is just covers of songs that were already popular on their own! This film is a last minute cut & paste nightmare, but that’s just my opinion.

The only thing that made my experience watching Trolls good was the recliner chairs at the Morristown AMC movie theater. If you get the chance, I highly recommend going there to witness them in all their glory. And afterward, you should go to The Committed Pig, which is a burger restaurant on the green. They have insane burgers, like one served on a glazed donut (?!), and everything there is really good. Boom. Date night. Just planned it out. You’re welcome.

If you’re still on the fence about Trolls, you can read more reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, IMDb, and Metacritic. Songs from the soundtrack of this movie can be found on iTunes, YouTube, and Spotify, and the Morristown AMC is located at 72 Headquarters Plaza, Morristown, NJ 07960.
