So far, the Mountain Lakes soccer family is off to a great start! Currently, the boys varsity team’s record is 8-7, and that of the girls varsity team is 8-6.
The boys started strong with a blowout away game against Dover. Marius Donnelly led the show by scoring a hattrick, while DJ Patel, Henryk Holding, and Andrew Lynch scored one a piece to bring the score to 6-0 for Mountain Lakes! Another game that should not go unmentioned was the double overtime win against Whippany Park. The ML team fought hard to come back in the second half (2-1), but unfortunately, the opposing team tied it up, making the score 2-2. Thankfully, in a powerful counter-attack, Merric Martorana was able to cross the ball into the box, which led to a great finish by Donnelly, who clinched the win. Another dominating performance against Morristown-Beard shows just how versatile MLHS soccer is. In that game, Donnelly scored two, while Martorana, Kolding, Ariano, and Janson each added one to the scoring party. Tijmen Ferwerda also maintained a clean sheet with 5 saves! Marius Donnelly leads the varsity soccer team in goals with 12 total. While the strikers get most of the glory up top, a few other positions are just as important. Notably, Ian Falconer (Goalie) has a stunning 61 total saves so far in the season.
The girl’s varsity team also had a blowout game, 4-0, against Parsippany Hills. Daisy Duda contributed two, while Abigail Hawes and Maya Ritchie each netted one goal each. In a hard-fought comeback victory against Morris Catholic, Daisy Duda, Ashton Parker, and Emily Tamayo scored one to come back late in the second half. On October 16th, a game against Summit also proved the abilities of the varsity team. In the first half of the game, Hawes struck first, but an equalizer from Summit’s Mackenzie Matter soon followed. Fortunately, the second half of the game told a different story. After a stalemate of only 20 minutes, Duda scored two goals in quick succession to put Mountain Lakes in front. Hawes then extended the lead to a comfortable 4-1 win. Abigail Hawes and Daisy Duda share the most goals this season with 11, while Shea Sutter, a freshman goalkeeper, has a crazy 79 saves.
As of now, the boys and girls varsity teams only have two games left to play. LET’S GO LAKERS!
