Disclaimer: This is not a partisan article.

Dear Congress,

In Greek mythos, there is a story often referred to as the story of Pandora’s Box. I will not bore you with the semantics and particulars of the story, but the gist is that Pandora opens a box and releases horrors upon humanity; however, she closes the box before humanity loses one thing: Hope.

I fear that Hope is inching up towards the lid of that box and is close to being released.

This may seem like a melodramatic attempt to discuss something that, quite frankly, doesn’t affect me, but I am tired of being angry. I am tired of having to scream so that someone hears a whisper. And I am sure many agree with me.

Since the election of 2016, everyone has been running on adrenaline, whether because they won or because they fear the new administration and its policies, but two years into this endeavor the adrenaline is running out. I am losing Hope that there will be reconciliation.

I am well aware of the fact that there have been partisan divides for a long time, and that this is probably not the worst it has ever been, but it sure feels like it is. Everyone is so consumed by their own viewpoint that they will not even deign to listen to the others. By ‘they,’ I mean you. It is frustrating on both sides of the aisle to listen to congressional hearings in which half of Congress does not listen and seems apathetic to these polarizing issues.

Lives are at stake with the legislation you pass, but it feels like a cruel joke, and with the amount of zeros piling on to the national debt and the Earth dying, I’m not sure anything actually matters. Even with the turmoil and commotion happening in DC, as freshmen Rep. Ocasio-Cortez butts heads with older members of Congress, it still feels like nothing is happening.

I call upon you to make this partisan hate and animosity GO AWAY. I ask that you take the future generations into account as they listen to you name-call and yell at each other and refuse to give people a chance to voice their opinion civilly from the opposite side of the aisle. I call upon you to make sure that Hope never runs out.

Sincerely,

A completely, dreadfully, emotionally tired high school student
