What do you prefer to re-energize with after a long night of studying, tea or coffee? Both drinks have been around for centuries, being consumed by people of different cultures and ethnicities all over the world. While coffee and tea come in many varieties and flavors, each supply their own unique pros and cons as an energy inducing beverage.

Coffee is a brewed drink prepared from roasted coffee beans. Those “beans” are actually the seeds of berries from the coffea plant, which is native to primarily equatorial regions of the Americas, Southeast Asia, India, and Africa. Coffee can be prepared in a multitude of ways, as you may know from ordering at your local Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts. The most well-known component of coffee, is, of course, caffeine, which is found in greater quantities in this drink than in tea. The caffeine in coffee may help you stay up to finish an essay or project, or encourage you to wake up to pay attention in class.

Surprisingly, all teas are made from the same plant, known as the camellia sinesis plant. Camellia sinesis thrives in the high mountain regions of central China and Japan. Blossoms, dried fruit, essential oils, roots, herbs, and spices are added to the tea leaves to add scent and flavor. The many health benefits of tea have been lauded ever since tea was created in China 2737 BC. Popular teas such as green, black, white, and oolong are known for their health benefits. Read on to find out what the top 5 health benefits from both coffee and tea.
