What Are the Golden Globes?

The Golden Globe Awards is a recognition of achievement in television during the previous year presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. It is an annual award ceremony that is held every January. The Golden Globe Awards started in 1944, honoring professional artists for their hard work in the film industry, including numerous categories in which films get recognized.

Major Category Winners

Oppenheimer received 5 awards including: Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture (ROBERT DOWNEY JR.), Best Original Score – Motion Picture (LUDWIG GÖRANSSON), Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director – Motion Picture (CHRISTOPHER NOLAN) and Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama (CILLIAN MURPHY).

Anatomy of a Fall received 2 awards including the Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language and Best Screenplay – Motion Picture.

Barbie was awarded with 2: Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and Best Original Song – Motion Picture (WHAT WAS I MADE FOR?).

The Holdovers was given 2 awards including the Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy (PAUL GIAMATTI) and the Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture (DA’VINE JOY RANDOLPH).

Poor Things received 2 awards: Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy & Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy (EMMA STONE).

The Boy and the Heron was awarded 1 award— the Best Motion Picture – Animated.

Drama at the Globes

Although the various awards were well-earned and excitingly unveiled, the night could have gone better. Between Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner’s public appearance as a couple, Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez being photographed gossiping with one another, and comedian Jo Koy’s controversial jokes, there was certainly lots to look back on. Spreading like wildfire on social media, many jokes made at the Golden Globes were viewed as unfunny and offensive. Jo Koy received next to no laughs after commenting that Oppenheimer is “based on a 721-page Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project, and Barbie is on a plastic doll with big boobies.” Combining his distasteful comparison between the two movies and various other offensive jokes, it’s safe to say Koy’s name is tainted.

Notable Fashion

Everyone loves an opportunity to dress up; while the point of the globes is to recognize significant films of the previous year, attendees also get to show off their outfits on the red carpet, including Margot Robbie’s pink Barbie-inspired dress and Taylor Swift’s sparkly green getup. Other celebrities made their own statements. Billie Eilish sported a business-attire spin on the dress code, Timothée Chalamet wore a sequined blazer, and Emma Stone repped a sparkly, floral Louis Vuitton gown. The looks ranged from the simplest of suits to intricate dresses, all of them being a unique representation of the celebrities. Golden Globe night is a great time to get a look at some fun fashion.
