This fall, the entire Mountain Lakes athletic program enjoyed enormous success. With accomplishments ranging from historical victories to continuing long-standing winning streaks, our sports teams represented our school phenomenally.

 Tennis

As usual, the girls tennis team was a formidable force. With a fantastic record of 20-2–undefeated in the Liberty Division–the girls took home the division title and the State Sectional title. Further, the team placed second State Group tournament, led by captains Allie Gregorek, Sanjana Ratakonda, and Ana Zorlas.

Cross Country

The boys’ and girls’ cross country teams had a great end to this season, with both qualifying and competing in the Meet of Champions at Holmdel Park. Before that, the two teams went nearly undefeated in the dual-meet season, each placing fifth at Morris County Championships.

Possibly even more impressively, the boys’ cross country team has not lost a division meet since the conception of the NJAC conference. Jared Cooper easily won the race by over 20 seconds, with Spencer Gillie and Jeremy Anderson finishing close behind in 4th and 7th respectively.

Despite graduating two of its top runners, the girls’ cross country team exceeded expectations, winning the State Sectional title for the third consecutive year, and placing second in Group 1. In the past seven years, the girls have won 5 sectional titles. The girls had a tougher time, but still managed to beat out Kinnelon by 10 points.

Izzi Gengaro led the team with a strong second place. Sophia Lore, Lucie Smith, and Kyra Rozanitis placed 3rd, 8th, and 10th. Since both teams placed in the top three at State Groups, they qualified for the Meet of Champions. There, many of the Lakers on both the boys’ and girls’ teams achieved personal bests. Jared Cooper fought his way to 16th overall with a time of 16:16, earning a medal for the top 20. Izzi Gengaro and Sophia Lore placed 27th and 29th overall, putting two Lakers in the top 30, a feat not easily done.

Soccer

In addition, the girls’ soccer team had a phenomenal season: its best of all time. Making the State Sectional finals for the first time ever, the team made MLHS proud, bringing home the State Sectional title. In addition, the girls narrowly missed qualifying for what would have been the team’s first State Group final. Moving up to Group 2, the boys’ soccer team faced tough competition in the State Sectional tournament, but performed well regardless. The team fought hard, advancing to the quarter-finals.
