Some of you may know famous DJs such as David Guetta, Martin Garrix, or Calvin Harris; however, you might not know of Peggy Gou, Charlotte De Witte, or MATTN. Gou, De Wit and MATTN are all famous women DJs who have performed at huge music festivals such as Tomorrowland and Ultra.
The DJ industry is mostly male with statistics reporting as high as 67% and females at 33%.
Female DJs may need to play twice as many shows in order to receive the recognition and equality that they deserve. Historically, the DJ industry has been patriarchal. It is reported that only 13% of the DJ industry is female. Women only account for 10% of performers at music festivals, 4% of DJ demand and only 2% of producers. These statistics are incredibly low.
Peggy Gou
Peggy Gou is a South Korean female DJ and is notoriously famous for her song entitled (It Goes Like) Nanana. She started learning how to DJ at age 18 and has continued ever since; she is currently 32 years old. After she started, Gou was captivated by DJing and even sacrificed the risk of failing out of fashion school to pursue DJing. Soon after, she started playing at clubs. Years later, she has created her most popular song, “(It Goes Like) Nanana” and it first gained popularity in a festival in Morocco and the crowd instantly exploded with excitement. Since then, Gou made a debut appearance on Billboard in 2019. This has helped her rise to popularity and now has 4 million instagram followers as well as 240 million streams on Spotify.
Charlotte De Witte
Charlotte De Witte is a Belgian DJ who focuses on producing techno music. She started at age 17 and created a stage name “Raving George” so that she wouldn’t be recognized as a female figure. In 2011, she won a DJ contest and then got invited to play at Tomorrowland which is a renowned music festival where many famous DJs perform. In 2013, she began producing her own music. Starting in 2015, she decided to use her real name instead. More recently, in 2023 she collaborated with an Italian producer Enrico Sangiuliano to release “High Street”
MATTN
MATTN is also a DJ who hails from Belgium. She covers more types of music including future house music, EDM, and big room. She started DJing in 2015 and later that same year, she surprisingly made a debut at Tomorrowland. MATTN has also played in other festivals such as Creamfields UK, Mainstage Sunburn, Ibiza’s Privilege and Amnesia, St Tropez’s VIP Room, Italy’s Number 1 and White Dubai. MATTN is also married to another renowned DJ, Dimitri Vegas. MATTN is slowly gaining popularity and is known for her skills, talent, charisma and passion for DJing, MATTN’s most famous song is “Children ”which was in conjunction with two other DJs: Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike.
While the statistics of female DJs are low, these DJs and other women DJs are changing the gender dynamics of the industry.
