Exploring Fortnite and the Latest Update

Fortnite, a video game known by many, is an immersive combat experience with a variety of available game modes, the most popular one being Battle Royale. In Fortnite battle royale, 100 players fight to be the last one standing on a large island map while also trying to avoid being killed by an ominous storm whose eye shrinks as the game progresses. This game involves a large variety of weapons and challenges and can be played either alone, in a duo, in a trio, or a group of four. Some of the other game modes include “zero builds”, “reload”, and many more.

Given that Battle Royale is the most widely played and the default game mode of Fortnite, this article will focus on the major changes it has undergone in the most recent update. At the start of December, players all around the world waited anxiously for not just a new season but a brand new chapter of Fortnite: Chapter 6, Season 1. This update has brought a map based on Japanese mythology full of cherry trees, samurai bosses, and many more exciting elements. Best of all? There is a new game mode in which you can play OG Fortnite once again!

Keep an eye out, as this update is the first of many that this season will see. December 1st marked the launch of Chapter 6, Winterfest dropped on the 10th, January 14th will bring a new version of the season, February 4th will be the final update of Season 1, and on February 21st, players will say goodbye to Season 1 and welcome a brand new season. If you’re anxious to find out more about Chapter 6, Season 1, keep reading!

Battle Pass

If you choose to buy the battlepass for this season, you will be able to unlock a variety of cosmetic items, v-bux, new pickaxes, new emotes, and of course, what everyone is most excited for, unique character skins. There are a ton of new samurai-themed characters that can either be purchased or unlocked including Baymax, the beloved character from Disney’s Big Hero Six movie, and a Godzilla skin that will be available in January.

There are many ways to gain experience points and level up in Fortnite but Chapter 6 offers a new one: expertise quests. These are side quests that can be taken on in-game to give players quick XP with difficult quests that get progressively harder. If you can get enough of these done, you may even unlock the ability to get better weapons from NPCs across the map that would be available for trading during the game.

All in all, this season’s battlepass features cool collaborations and lots of new ways to gain XP, but if you are not a massive Big Hero Six fan, don’t feel the need to spend money on it.

Below is a list of all the major locations on this season’s map!

  • Flooded Frogs
  • Whiffy Wharf
  • Magic Mosses
  • Pumped Power
  • Lost Lake
  • Brutal Boxcars
  • Twinkle Terrace
  • Nightshift Forest
  • Foxy Floodgate
  • Shining Span
  • Seaport City
  • Warrior’s Watch
  • Burd
  • Canyon Crossing
  • Masked Meadows – (guaranteed mask spawn here!)
  • Shogun’s Solitude
  • Hopeful Heights

This map includes lots of new underground areas to explore, a “no dancing” sign (don’t try to be a rebel, the game will launch you off a cliff if you dance in front of it), a giant turtle defended by an NPC that will randomly spawn in each match, a demon warrior you can find and kill for loot, and much more.

Bosses

If you get lucky enough to take on one of the two NPC bosses this season has to offer, take the chance; if you win, the loot is incredible. Find Shogun X, a teleporting boss with high levels of health, to earn a mythic sword, a mythic fire mask, and a medallion. The fire mask can shoot players with explosives, the medallion can turn you invisible for periods, and the blade is an incredible weapon. Night Rose, the other boss, can be found in Demon’s dojo and drops a mythic SMG, a medallion, and a void mask. Her mask can be used to throw portals, the medallion will automatically reload your weapons, and the mythic SMG is inarguably one of the best guns in the game. Proceed with caution – Night Rose is protected by henchmen with katanas!

Weapons & Items to Look Out For

Here are some of the most important things to keep an eye out for this season:

  • Masks: These items, each of them fitting into the categories of either fire or void masks, come in a variety of rarities and can be obtained by either defeating one of the two bosses or finding them in chests. The different levels of rarity determine how much damage they do, and the best masks will be obtained from either Shogun X or Night Rose.
  • Swords: Swords, or typhoon blades obtainable from stands and elemental chests in most major map locations, pack a powerful punch and are useful at close range. These weapons can be used to run faster, slice enemies, or do special attacks; try for yourself!
  • New guns: A major change to guns in this update is the addition of a hit scan. Instead of how one would previously have to account for the time it would take for a bullet to reach their enemy, there is no travel time for bullets and where you aim is where your shot will immediately end up. This makes guns feel more intuitive and similar to og Fortnite. Here are the new guns available:
  • Fury assault rifle: This gun is deemed a little underwhelming but can be found in all rarities up to mythic. The mythic version is only obtainable by defeating the boss Shogun X who roams the island. It has a high fire rate, but doesn’t do much damage nor has great scope.
  • Twinfire auto shotgun: Similar to the Chapter 5 frenzy auto shotgun but less powerful, this gun allows you to spam shots super quick which makes it useful in high-speed combat situations. However, since the shots are fairly weak, they are and are harder to eliminate people with. This gun is better in the zero builds game mode since it is not great for breaking structures to get to people.
  • Oni shotgun: Although this shotgun is able to do crazy damage and is great for close range, it only has 2 shells available before you need to reload. This makes it hard to master, but if you use it at the right time and place, it can be incredibly useful.
  • Holo twister AR: The holo twister dominates the AR category, using a scope with a red dot to line up with players. This is a weapon based on accuracy and allows users to do lots of damage before needing to reload. It is also available in the mythic rarity as the enhanced holo twister AR, which can be found in the train chest.
  • Surgefire SMG: SMGS are super important in chapter 6, given that they are powerful and accessible, and this one has a feature that increases its fire rate if you hold the trigger. The Surgefire SMG does good structure damage if your enemy is sheltered, making it great for exposing them and rapidly firing them with shots.
  • Sentinel pump shotgun: Although this is the most powerful shotgun in chapter six, the sentinel pump shotgun has the slowest fire rate in the season. However, it is so powerful that you can kill someone with just a headshot if you get your timing right
  • Veiled precision SMG: Arguably the best gun this season, the veiled precision SMG has great accuracy, and great fire rate, is great for close range, and has red-eye sight like the holo twister AR so you can even use it for long range! It is as powerful as long-range, but its accuracy makes it great and relentless.
  • Sprites: These adorable creatures are found throughout the map, each of them having a unique ability
    • Earth sprite: There are 2 of these per game, with each of them spawning randomly. With this sprite, you can trade in your items for either consumables or a legendary weapon.
    • Water sprite: If you capture one, these sprites can be thrown down to heal you and your teammates like a shield keg. They have 3 charges before they become useless.
    • Air sprite: The air sprites look similar to the water sprites, but these can act as a launch pad when thrown down. They have 3 charges just like the water sprites.
  • Shrines: These structures can be used to turn in sprites. If you do so, you’ll get a boon and weapons. The boons are items that are based on elements and give players unique abilities, depending on the type of sprite you deliver, and can also be found in elemental chests.
  • Vehicles: In this season, the rogue bike from chapter 4 makes its return! This bike is great for speeding through the roads of the map, but if you want to drive off-road check out the new dirt bike. Additionally, there is a brand new void car, and SUVs make their return.

More!

To add to the list of all the new things to look out for in game, there are new ways to move around, including an ability to roll before landing to break fall damage. On top of that, the train has been completely redesigned; it no longer goes in and out of the storm all the time like the old train, and the chest will drop a mythic AR. there are also easier ways to edit builds that can be toggled in settings, and, as anticipated by many veteran players, OG Fortnite has made its return! Players now can access a game mode that transports them back to the original map of Fortnite in all of its glory. More things to keep an eye out for are the new lego game modes, a 5v5 game mode, and Winterfest.

Players’ Thoughts

With so much more to come, its hard to form a complete opinion on the season as of now. Although the lack of heavy snipers is disappointing, they could make their return in later versions of the season. The battle pass features unique skins, and the game itself is themed very nicely. While hitscan is appreciated by many, it takes less skill and could be bad for the future of fortnite. On the positive side, everyone seems to be happy OG fortnite is there as an option, which is appreciated for its gun mechanics, style, simplicity, balanced loot pool, and more. However, a major complaint is how much harder it is to obtain XP this season and therefore to level up. Overall, the season is beautifully done on a visual level and there is a lot to look forward to.
