The Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul fight has been one of the most anticipated events for the past almost year and a half. It started when Jake Paul, a famous influencer out of Los Angeles, California, called out Mike Tyson in the ring. Mike Tyson, although being a 58 year old man who was recognized as the greatest heavyweight boxer in the world three decades ago, accepted the challenge and the fight was set for July 20th, 2024. Unfortunately, the fight had to be postponed due to Tyson having complications on a flight out of Miami in late May. The fight was postponed to November 15th, but the same anticipation was kept.
Netflix would soon announce that they would be the leading streaming site for the bout, and they couldn’t have been less ready. Jake Paul’s boxing brand agency, Most Valuable Promotions, sponsored the fight, which is ironic as he was the one fighting that night. Going into the fight, the odds were stacked against Jake Paul. Ask anybody who they thought would win the fight and nine times out of ten: Mike Tyson came out on top. The event started at 8:30 PM on November 15th, starting with a lackluster battle for the Very Lightweight Champion. However, the next two would shape the night as Abel Ramos and Mario Barrios duked it out extraordinarily better than the Neeraj Goyat and Whindersson Nunes bout. The next fight was different, though, as Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano had a gruesome back-and-forth punch-out. Although Serrano seemed like the clear-cut winner as she had plumished Taylor all night, Katie Taylor won by decision in one of the most controversial endings of possibly this year in UFC.
Finally, at 11:00, Tyson vs Paul was on. To say the least, it was an underwhelming bout. Although Tyson came out explosive, he began to slow down only after the second round. No one could have seen this coming as the match conditions were in his favor as a slugger; two-minute rounds, 14-ounce gloves, and only eight rounds should have made his life easier, but it seemed like quite the opposite. He could barely keep himself up in the ring, and people should have now remembered that Mike Tyson isn’t the same 20-year-old slugger he was 30 years ago. Not to mention, Netflix was having exceptional technical difficulties as at some points while watching, the screen would take the viewer to a never-ending buffering screen. The only way to stop it was by exiting the live projection and tuning back in. During the fight, 60 million TVs worldwide were watching at once and Netflix, the biggest streaming site on the internet, could not handle the responsibility they wanted for themselves. By the 5th round, Tyson had gassed entirely out, and he seemed highly sluggish, while Paul still had much steam in the tank.
Jake Paul would win the fight 80-72, extending his record to 11-1 and having a heavyweight championship belt in his sack of victories. Not to mention beating Mike Tyson is also one of his accomplishments. Jake Paul could not have faced more adversity before the fight. The odds were stacked against him, but he still pulled away with the belt. Tyson vs. Paul Fight Night held much anticipation, but it was a subpar night of bouts in the end. Although he had a disappointing loss, Mike Tyson announced he would not be retiring after his loss to Jake Paul, which begs the question, who will Mike Tyson be fighting next? Or better yet, who will Jake Paul fight next?
