Overview
For those that do not know, the Selena and Hailey drama largely revolves around a man: Justin Bieber. Selena and Justin dated on and off for years. However, in 2018, Hailey and Justin married. Now in 2023, the supposed “drama” implies that Hailey is insecure about Selena’s past with Justin, while Selena is jealous of their current marriage. Recently, Selena posted a story to her 400 million followers begging them to stop sending hateful messages to Hailey. Despite the immense hate that both women have received, Justin Bieber has yet to speak out on the situation.
Media’s Impact
Media has decided to take small interactions between Hailey and Selena and turn them into a full-on feud, despite denial from both parties. Social media sleuths find small coincidences and use them as evidence to claim that Hailey is copying Selena or that the women are “shading” each other. Some people have even begun to insult Hailey/Selena’s appearances and families. # Team Selena or # Team Hailey are sprinkled across social media posts. Various other celebrities have even been dragged into the feud, including Kylie Jenner and Kendall Jenner. It is interesting that these women receive hate so quickly, but almost no men have been brought down by the feud.
Commentary
Younger generations love to proclaim “Girls Supporting Girls.” However, widespread attention to the “Selena vs Hailey Drama” proves that in the end, many people will find entertainment in bringing other women down. Perhaps this is something that has been internalized by many Americans. The movies, tv, books, and general media that we grow up consuming are filled with women pitted against each other. Women are compared often based on their beauty and status. Many feuds revolve around “stolen husbands” or “stolen boyfriends,” however, the men are conveniently left out of the drama. Other feuds are based on talent, where instead of praising women’s successes, they must be compared and ranked.
Final Thoughts
Sure, many female stars might not like other celebrities. Some may make public comments about one another. However, this does not give people the right to get involved and insult women. Not every dispute has to be a feud. And not every woman has to battle another woman for success.
