What Crisis are They Facing Right Now?
Although Honduras seems like a beautiful place to live, they have been undergoing several crises over the past few decades. Several tropical storms, like Hurricane Iota, severely impacted the people of Honduras as they experienced detrimental floods and damage to their country. Not only have storms impacted their country, but about 74% of their population already live well below the poverty line. As a result of the large percentage of poverty in Honduras, there have been food shortages and lack of consumption of proper nutrition. Insufficient amounts of food have resulted from unpredictable weather and severe droughts which caused people in rural areas to lose over half of the crops they have grown to sell. Additionally, acts of violence are prevalent in many cities in Honduras, which include gang violence regarding drugs and human trafficking. Many Honduran residents live in constant fear and are in desperate need of help, which is why several countries, as well as private donors, have stepped in to create a healthier society for them.
What is the Humanitarian Aid Plan?
Now, Honduras is introducing a new plan, introduced by the United Nations, that will aid crop failures due to the recent flooding, drought, and tropical storms. It will also assist insecurity caused by gangs and drug trafficking. This plan will need $280 million from the Honduran government, but humanitarian organizations, including organizations in the United Nations and other donors, will also aid them. This year, 100 new projects will be funded, including crop restoration programs, food supply, health and water programs, and assistance to people who have been displaced due to the severe weather. This plan focuses on localized access to rights for 3.2 million people in need while considering their gender, age, and diversity.
How will this plan affect the future of Honduras?
With the humanitarian efforts started by the UN and the Honduran government, the civilians in this country will begin to thrive once more. Many people will not have to starve to death, but can instead consume more food than they have had in years. Not only will people receive a basic necessity for living, but they will also have access to healthcare. There are so many people who cannot afford to go receive the treatments they need, but with this plan, so many people can live a healthier lifestyle where they can get help and live a better quality of life. Lastly, people who lost their homes due to severe weather damage are finally getting the assistance they need. The money being funded will be used to help rebuild people’s homes wrecked by these constant hurricanes and provide enough clothing and shelter for them in the future.
