Have you been in the student parking lot lately and wondered what those pops of color peeking out from underneath some of the senior spots are? Around 25 seniors came to Mountain Lakes High School on September 22–yes, a Saturday–willingly and voluntarily to spend various amounts of time to paint their beloved parking spots.

The logistics and the process might seem crazy the more you think about it. If you’re curious about how people made the spots or you’re even interested in doing it in the coming years, then take a look at this guide.

Step 1: Get yourself in the zone. If you’re like Lucie and Meghan, coffee might help with that.

Step 2: Set up all of your paints and materials. Most people didn’t have the inventory that Nolan and Charlotte had, but don’t let that discourage you.

Step 3.1: Time to sketch out your design if free-handing isn’t your thing.

Step 3.2: You can totally just go in with the free-handing too. Gives it more of that authentic graffiti experience.

Step 4: Get your paint cans open (with a screwdriver, of course).

Step 5: Paint, paint, paint!

Step 6: Get some advice from your friends.

Step 7: Make your finishing touches.

Step 8: Take in how great your parking spot is by taking pictures of it (and with it)!

  • Trinity Pallaria with her completed parking spot.
  • Halle Korman says “[she] chose “No Day But Today” from the Broadway musical Rent because [she] find[s] the quote inspirational. To [her] it means to live in the moment and to make the most of each day.”
  • Nolan Hornby's completed parking spot.
  • Andie Credidio put a “For Sale” sign since she’s not a fan of how far her spot is from the gym door and she’d be happy to sell it off to anyone who can get her a better spot!
  • Anita Shanker was originally trying to parody the Patagonia logo but for Mountain Lakes, but recreating the lettering was too much of a hassle. So, she free-handed it, and she’s really happy with the result.
  • Bradley Bogues's completed parking spot.
  • Donovan Menard's musical parking spot.
  • Ella Harris-Hohne's spot featured some tropical vibes.
  • Emma Lenthe's completed parking spot.
  • Ethan Ash's parking spot incorporated airplane runway markings!
  • Julia Stanisci and Eve Sorrentino wanted something that incorporated both of their spots since they got spots right next to each other this year. However, due to a lack of supply and a time crunch from a soccer game, they almost didn’t get the chance to decorate their spot! Thanks to some quick thinking from Juliana Scerbo and some white paint from Anita Shanker (Julia and Eve colored it later), the two spots now share a smile.
  • Julia Matalon's spot referenced Alice in Wonderland.
  • Libby Perler's spot paid homage to "Friends".
  • Orli Sweifach's parking spot will definitely catch some eyes.
  • Juliana Scerbo found her idea off of Pinterest.
  • Meghan Powers and Lucie Smith referenced everyone's favorite Scranton paper company.
  • Maddie Miles's oceanic parking spot.
  • Maddie Penniston's spot was a throwback to her childhood.
