The Toastmasters Gavel Club is a new organization at Mountain Lakes High School. It serves to help students refine their public speaking skills. Toastmasters was first introduced to the school last year in the form of a nine-week public speaking workshop. Participants were highly receptive to this experience and felt that it truly improved their public speaking abilities.
As a result, current juniors Sabrina Ravin and Caroline Daly were inspired to begin a Toastmasters Gavel Club for the 2019-2020 school year. They secured approval from the administration and asked Mr. Hoffman to serve as the club advisor.
Sabrina and Caroline share leadership responsibilities with three other juniors: Zofia Fernandini, Salmaan Shafqat, and Leon Xie. They introduced the organization at last month’s Club Fair, where 79 people expressed interest in joining. Two meetings have taken place so far.
Each meeting has a specific agenda, and attendees practice various forms of public speaking. At the meeting on Wednesday, October 23rd, everyone took a turn delivering impromptu remarks on a surprise topic. The audience was very supportive of each presenter and offered constructive criticism. Club members can volunteer for different roles at each meeting.
There are several roles within the club. The Topicsmaster provides speech topics for the meeting, the General Evaluator assesses the general proceedings of the meeting, the Grammarian makes suggestions concerning speakers’ diction, and the Timer times each speaker.
Students who have not signed up for Toastmasters, but would like to participate, are welcome to join the club! You can directly contact any of the above mentioned club leaders to learn more about future meeting times and how best to get involved.
