The Met Gala 2023 was hosted earlier this month on May 1, 2023. Many extravagant looks appeared on the red carpet and included outfits from various luxury clothing collections, including Chanel, Valentino, Marc Jacobs, Gucci, and many more! In addition, every Met Gala has a distinct theme, this year’s being Karl Lagerfeld, a German fashion designer with an incredible legacy.

Who is Karl Lagerfeld?

Before joining Chanel in 1983, Lagerfeld began his career in fashion in the 1950s, working for a number of prestigious design firms, including Balmain, Patou, and Chloé. From 1983 until his passing, he served as Chanel’s creative director, supervising all aspects of the fashion house’s creative output, including collection design, commercial campaigns, and window displays. He had a significant role in reviving the Chanel brand and assisting it in reclaiming its place as one of the foremost fashion brands worldwide. Along with running his own eponymous fashion line, Lagerfeld served as the creative director of the Italian fur and leather goods fashion house: Fendi. He worked with others on numerous fashion and art-related projects during the course of his career. Lagerfeld’s ideas and legacy still influence the fashion industry.

In spite of Lagerfeld’s legacy, he also has a lengthy history of making disparaging remarks about immigrants, people who are obese, and other groups. He also consistently claimed to be “exhausted” with the Me Too campaign in 2018. Furthermore, he frequently made fun of other people’s appearances, specifically promoting the ideal standard of beauty that manifests in the mainstream modeling industry. Lagerfeld made the decision to continue using thin models to display his creations as his contemporaries and the fashion industry started to move toward a more inclusive environment. The German designer noted, “There are less than one percent of anorexic girls. But there are zero in France, I don’t know in England – over 30 percent of girls [are] big, big, overweight. And that is much more dangerous and very bad for your health. So I think today, with the junk food in front of the TV, it’s something dangerous for the health of the girl. The models are not skinny enough”. Karl was also quite outspoken on how he was, “against [same-sex marriage] for a very simple reason: In the 60s, they all said we had the right to the difference. And now, suddenly, they want a bourgeois life…” Lagerfeld also made many other offensive remarks, launched into many diatribes discussing his support for anti-feminist violence, and belittled Angela Merkel’s decision to open Germany’s borders to Syrian refugees.
