Senioritis is the leading illness in our high school, just beating the common cold and flu. Beware of senioritis: it is real.

Throughout my high school career, I would see seniors walk so slow they would be clogging up the flow of traffic in the hallway. Maybe even wearing slippers and sweats every day. During all of this, all I wondered was just why? Being a senior is one of those things you never fully understand until you become one.

Senioritis is real and I am first hand experiencing it. But so are 175 other students in our building and over 16 billion worldwide.

What is Senioritis?

It is the burnout seniors face from their heavy course load and the big decisions they are faced with, including the worries of studying for the SAT, and picking schools to apply to and visiting them. With senioritis comes carelessness, tardiness, and, for some, a drop in grades.

Symptoms

Symptoms may look like:

  • Clogging up the hallway (walking SO slow)
  • Being late to class and not caring
  • Little motivation
  • Procrastinating more than usual
  • Running to your car after school to beat the parking lot traffic to get home faster (even though you aren’t rushing to do homework, but rather just to be home)
  • Online shopping in class
  • Wearing slippers/sweats to school every day
  • Not getting changed for gym

Seniors’ Experience With Senioritis

How has this affected students’ lives though? Here is what some of the seniors had to say.

Teachers’ Perspectives

Surely we aren’t the only ones noticing this issue in our peers; the teachers do as well. As the year progresses and the weather becomes warmer, the seniors focus on Spring sports or their life after high school – ultimately leaving teachers to find different ways to still keep their students engaged, especially in the second semester.

I think it helps when the warm weather comes to spend time outside. I think senioritis is a fact of life and there’s no avoiding.

Solutions

Here are some methods you should consider using if you are experiencing senioritis or even a slump!

  • Incorporate more things you love to do into your routine
    • Working out, going outside, art, watching sports
  • Spend more time with your friends/family
  • Make plans for the weekend (so you have something to look forward to)
  • Reward yourself after accomplishing tasks like homework or finally taking a big test
    • Take a break, grab dinner at your favorite restaurant, or hang out with your friends
  • Go to a new place with friends to get work done or for fun
  • Apply to scholarships before your parents can get on you about applying!
  • Remain optimistic (remind yourself it’s only a few more months until college)
  • Grab Starbucks!! Nothing retail therapy can’t fix

Keep Your Head Up

Like Mrs. Preston said, senioritis cannot be avoided but we can find ways to help manage it. In all seriousness though, if things get worse there are always resources like our school counselors to help you with day-to-day issues or therapists if your issues have become more permanent. It is also important to remember that waiting for your college decision is only temporary.

Seniors, try to enjoy the remaining quarter of your high school career in the meantime.
