It is no secret that climate change has been impacting mankind for decades across the globe. One of its latest victims was Pakistan, which experienced historic flooding, resulting in over one thousand deaths and millions losing their homes and communities. Here are the fast facts to help you learn more about this dire situation and how you can help Pakistan’s residents.
Fast Facts
The flooding occurred as a result of climate change
The flooding began due to monsoon rains that were much stronger and heavier than usual, lasting for almost eight weeks. Although monsoons can be common in these areas, they are becoming increasingly worse because of global warming. As global temperatures rise the atmosphere is able to hold more water and increase the likelihood of intense monsoons.
This flooding is the worst Pakistan has seen for many years
At one point, approximately ⅓ of the country was underwater. There have been over 1,000 recorded deaths and about 33 million people who have been left without homes. These intense rains washed away buildings, crops, and even villages. Health facilities, schools, and water systems were left in ruins because of the flooding, causing an acute child survival crisis. Millions of children are experiencing various health issues, including malnutrition, but do not have the resources available to be treated.
People are still suffering months later
Although the flooding began in June, the people of Pakistan are still struggling. The floods have now subsided but Pakistan is experiencing a difficult recovery. The survivors were left more susceptible to waterborne diseases and have been experiencing infections, typhoid, dengue fever, and more. Children are even more vulnerable to these diseases but are not able to get the help they need due to the lack of supplies and resources.
