It’s the most wonderful time of the year right?! For hot chocolate that is. Hot chocolate is a winter staple and although it doesn’t feel too cold out that hasn’t stopped my family from enjoying it. We love the Swiss Miss Milk Chocolate mix but have begun to wonder, is this mix superior to all other brands?
In this article I am taking it upon myself to try different hot chocolate mixes to see if Swiss Miss Milk Chocolate mix is superior because A. it is just that good or B. all of the other brands are a letdown. To help me taste test the various hot chocolates I brought in the hot chocolate expert: my 12-year-old brother, Jack. I would consider myself a connoisseur with most foods and beverages, but hot chocolate is right up Jack’s alley. He has perfected the ratio of hot chocolate mix to milk in our beloved cocomotion (hot chocolate maker). Not only this but he has the ability to analyze hot chocolate like no other.
Ghirardelli
Right off the bat, I have high standards because it is Ghiradelli and they have great chocolate and brownie mixes. Unfortunately, it did not deliver and really disappointed us.
Jack 5/10 (no flavor or smell)
Sam 6/10 (I give it a higher score of a 6 because there were mini chocolate chips. Other than that there was a faint dark chocolate taste.)
Conclusion: 5.5/10 wouldn’t recommend buying
Nestle
We were eager to try this brand because Nestle also has good chocolate.
Jack 6/10 (Not a lot of flavor)
Sam 6.5/10 (It is better than Ghirardelli because it has a bit more flavor. The chocolate is good.)
Conclusion: 6.25/10 would buy if there was no Swiss Miss
Land O’Lakes
I usually don’t tend to reach for this brand but I was curious to try it for the purpose of this article. We bought 2 flavors: Chocolate Supreme and French Vanilla
Chocolate Supreme
Jack 0/10 (He refused to try it because after I drank it I made a face. Also, he is 12 and a picky eater so I couldn’t convince him to drink it)
Sam 0/10 (Do not recommend. It does not have a chocolate taste as you would expect and it was very odd.)
French Vanilla
Sam 1/10 (Had a very very funky aftertaste. I rate it a 1 because it wasn’t as bad as the last one)
Jack 0/10 (He refused to drink this one too)
Conclusions: Don’t buy this brand
Dunkin’ Keurig Pods
Sam 8.7/10 (Solid hot chocolate. Flavor was there. Points taken away because we did have to use water but I love Dunkin hot chocolate either way.)
Jack 8.5 (Chocolatey but has a weird aftertaste.)
Conclusion 8.6/10: Would buy again
Swiss Miss
Caramel
Sam 6.7/10 (Definitely better than the Nestle because the flavor was there. However, it was an odd mix and I didn’t really like it.)
Would recommend if you love caramel- other than that wouldn’t buy
White Chocolate
Sam 6.6/10 (Very sweet however flavor was there. But I don’t see myself ever drinking this or the salted caramel.)
Milk Chocolate
Jack 10/10 (Chocolately but just the right amount. Would recommend.)
Sam 9/10 (Flavor is great but there’s no marshmallows in it which is my only con. Obviously they don’t come in it but I like the mix with the mini marshmallows better)
Marshmallow
Jack 9/10 (Didn’t like the mini marshmallows. Claimed to be “sliding down his throat”. But the flavor is there.)
Sam 10/10 (All I could ever ask for in a hot chocolate and more. Perfect milk chocolate flavor throughout. Mini marshmallows add a perfect sweetness and aesthetic. Better than the regular milk chocolate.)
Conclusion: The flavored mixes are spot on, so if you are looking for either of those flavors…Swiss Miss will deliver. HIGHLY recommend buying Swiss Miss MARSHMALLOW.
After reading the recommendations my brother and I made we hope you can go to the store and try some new options or maybe steer away from the ones we wouldn’t recommend. Because at the end of the day, we are all busy and don’t necessarily have the time to make things from scratch or go try new things. Happy holidays!
