The 80/20 lifestyle can be applied to all aspects of your life, including exercise, diet, and leisure. Many people use this lifestyle to maintain physical health, gain discipline, or to overall better their mental health. Improvements in your overall health and mood are often noticed anywhere from 2-4 weeks from starting this lifestyle.

What is the 80/20 Rule?

The 80/20 rule is a set of rules consisting of choosing the more beneficial lifestyle decisions 80% of the time, while still letting yourself enjoy cheat days 20% of the time. Many people have a hard time sticking to diets and exercise plans due to the little wiggle room, but with the 80/20 rule, knowing that you are allowed some cheat meals/days helps to make the journey a little less bothersome.

There are 3 Main Components of the 80/20 Lifestyle:

  1. Mindset: In order to stick to a plan, you have to have the right mindset. The way you talk to yourself and others around you is incredibly important, and has a clear reflection on your attitude and perception towards change. Daily affirmations, deep breathing exercises and positive reassurance are some ways in which you can focus on your mindset and help relax your mind and body.
  2. Discipline: The most important factor of changing yourself is discipline. Without discipline, your goals will never be reached and you will most likely be discouraged because you will not notice any change. You have to want your goals enough to get out of your comfort zone and keep showing up every day.
  3. Consistency: Many people can go to the gym for one week, eat clean for one week, wake up early for one week. But not many people can stick to their original plan and stay consistent, even after they get tired and bored. Showing up every day is, by far, the most crucial part of your journey.

In my experience with the 80/20 lifestyle, I have noticed significant changes in my mood, physical endurance, and a sense of calm in my mind. At first, I started this rule to stop procrastinating on my school work and better manage my time. Not only did I learn more about time management, but I also learned a huge amount of knowledge about my diet, exercise, and sleep. Following this plan has improved my lifestyle in so many different ways, and I highly encourage all of my family and friends to consider trying it; once you notice the benefits, you won’t look back!

Finding balance is key in the 80/20 rule. While working hard towards your goals is the most effective, having time to reward yourself and decompress is just as important. “Healing takes time. Change takes time. We focus on the journey and in doing so, our small incremental changes and gains do add up to tremendous results.” In conclusion, if you’re looking to improve any aspect of your life, the 80/20 lifestyle may be the solution for you.
