Read Time:3 Minute, 4 Second

Around wintertime last year, many students received friend requests on Snapchat and Instagram from an unknown account named “MLHS Foods.” At the time, MLHS Foods was shrouded in mystery, and rumors spread that the account was run by MLHS Administrators spying on students. As salacious as that may sound, the account turned out to be much less malicious. MLHS Foods was a business created by then-junior Giancarlo Pisciotta to offer students the chance to buy bagels and coffee in school. The business has been going strong for over a year, and is well-known by students and teachers. A frequent customer myself, I recently sat down with Giancarlo to discuss the inner workings of MLHS Foods.

Maimoonah: “First things first, how did you come up with this idea?”

Giancarlo: “Last year, I was talking with a senior friend of mine, Ryan Quade — shoutout — and then we just created a Snapchat account and added everyone…[Editor’s Note: People thought they were Juul spies for the MLHS Administration]. Well actually, I guess Dan Nowak was the first one to do it. He did it for people in his class…“Dan’s Famous Bagels”…but then we scaled it up and offered it to everyone.”

Maimoonah: “Was it difficult to get the administration’s approval?”

Giancarlo: “They don’t know….”

Maimoonah: “Describe a typical day when you choose to sell food.”

Giancarlo: “Well, the night before, I put out the Snap and I get everyone’s preorders. And then I write them all down to record them. And then…like, 6 in the morning, I call either Old Towne or Hot Bagels with the order. I’ll leave to pick them up around 7. I go to Dunkin’ Donuts first and then I get the bagels, so they stay warm. The businesses know we’re going to be coming in every week and we’re friends. We’re bois [sic].”

Maimoonah: “What changes have you made to MLHS Foods since you started it?”

Giancarlo: “The only changes we’ve made…well, now we go to Old Towne. Before we used to do Hot Bagels twice a week; now, we do one and one. And then Instagram…that took off…we do Bagel of the Week. That’s about it really, same idea.”

Maimoonah: “Explain the MLHS Foods Twitter @bagelboytellem.”

Giancarlo: “The Twitter…I have nothing to do with it. Look, anyone can make a Twitter account. I don’t have Twitter on my phone! People come up to me and say ‘What’d you say on Twitter?’ I’m like, ‘What are you talking about?’ But it’s funny.”

Maimoonah: “How did you decide what items to sell?

Giancarlo: “Basically, what was popular…I personally love a good bacon, egg, and cheese but everyone seems to love Taylor ham, egg, and cheese. So that’s sort of what we focus on. That’s the number 1 and 2. That’s what we sell the most of. So we just sort of sell what people like and if people have suggestions…we think about it…we haven’t really taken any suggestions into account…but everyone seems pretty happy with the bagels and the Taylor ham egg and cheese sandwiches. Nothing really to change.”

On the off chance that you haven’t heard of MLHS Foods yet, add them on Snap @mlhs-foods and hit them with an Instagram follow @mlhs_foods (you might win the bagel of the week)! Get your orders in on Snapchat every Tuesday and Thursday to pick up your bagel/coffee before first period. You won’t be disappointed. And, no, I was not paid to say that.
