In the days leading up to MLHS’s first pep rally in years, many students were confused as to what it would entail. We’d heard about pep rallies from our friends at neighboring schools, but all of us had yet to experience a Mountain Lakes pep rally. In order to get a better understanding of what exactly would be “going down” on September 14th, I spoke to our Student Liaison, Meg Hatton.
She explained that the pep rally was Mr. Pfister’s idea, but the administration had been very accommodating of the students’ ideas as well. Without giving away too much, she told me that the fall sports team captains would be competing in a special challenge, the cheerleaders would perform a routine, and that the team captains would be throwing t-shirts into the crowd. When asked about the purpose of the pep rally, she said that the SGA and the administration wanted to bolster school spirit and hype up the students.
After a shortened ninth period on Friday, the entire MLHS student body filed into the gym, where they sat on the bleachers and patiently waited. SGA president Julia Stanisci and Mr. Sanchez opened the event and Meg Hatton put together a special video with footage from various Laker sporting events over the years. As the video was projected onto a school wall, the room began to buzz with enthusiasm and excitement. It was clear that Mountain Lakes’ students were ready to experience their first pep rally.
The team captains for each fall sport started coming out, joined by the seniors on the team. They introduced themselves to the crowd, rightfully representing their teams with their short speeches and banter. Each team was greeted with enthusiasm and warm welcomes, including the newly formed Mountain Lakes girls volleyball team.
The fun truly began when the girls tennis team launched signed balls into the student bleacher section. Students reached left and right to catch the prizes, but only a few prevailed. The cheerleaders, well accustomed to firing up a crowd, performed an incredible routine similar to that of a professional squad. Students watched in awe as they expertly flipped and tumbled, exclaiming words of support and spirit.
And yet, the best was only yet to come. The MLHS student body cheered the loudest when the Herd came out and threw t-shirts into the crowd. There was a home game that night, and most of MLHS was ready to put on something “bright and tight” and head out to watch their team on the field.
Most memorably, a representative from each fall sport got on a tricycle and attempted to race across the gym and back!
Through the student body’s laughing and cheers, Mr. Sanchez declared Maddie Penniston the winner. With that, MLHS’s first fall pep rally in recent years came to a close and left many students wondering what would happen in all of the pep rallies to come.
