Here at Mountain Lakes High School, the camera is rolling for film-making fanatics to join the new film club. The club is run by Veronica Tullo, a tenth grader, and Ms. Adams, an art teacher and head of the yearbook committee. I got the opportunity to ask Veronica about her new ideas for this fresh and exciting club.
When asked about her inspiration to start a filmmaking club, she said: “I was part of a film club in my old school, and it was a big part of what got me into film production in the first place.” In her old school’s film club, members spend the school year filming. Then, the auditorium is rented out for a viewing party for parents and students at the end of the school year. When Veronica transferred to MLHS and heard that there was no film production club, she said: “I knew I really wanted to introduce students to my passion.” Veronica also said that her desire to make a writer’s idea come to life on the big screen is another reason why she wants to start the club.
Not only does Veronica loves watching films, but she recounted that, previously, “having been able to make a film that was shown at a nationwide film festival was an amazing experience.” In addition, Veronica said that she is very excited to share her love of film with the MLHS community. Her favorite types of films to watch and create include mythology and films with fantasy settings.
Maybe the thought of making an entire film seems daunting, but don’t worry. If you enjoy writing, have an interest in cameras, or a burning desire to put your endless imagination onto a big screen, you can participate in the many jobs offered in MLHS’s Film Club: Director, Assistant Director, Producer, Actors, Grips (people in charge of the technical aspects), etc. The club has both writers and filmmakers who can submit scripts to be produced, and then they coordinate a date when everyone is available to start the first takes. Another goal of Veronica’s is to get incoming freshmen to join. From there, there would be actors and scripts so the club can grow from there to make films that they will show someday!
During a typical meeting, the club collaborates a schedule for the next week, such as tasks they want to get done. They might plan goals for next week, like writing, continuing a script, getting started with filming, and more. Every meeting, they talk about what it’s like to write a script and get the software for it.
Are you eager to grab your camera and some props? Let’s get filming! The club meets every Tuesday from 2:45 to 3:45 behind the auditorium curtains (room 119). The camera is rolling!
