Ever since its release on December 8, 2022, “Harry & Meghan” – the Netflix documentary on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex – has taken the internet by storm. Ranging from sympathy to brutal trolls, this Netflix series has inflicted it all upon this undeniably iconic couple. Their documentary can be seen as a raw and unfiltered glimpse into their side of “what went down” with the Royal family – or as a cheap attempt to gain popularity and tarnish the already deprived reputation of the British Crown. This article will take a look into the details of this series and the true motive behind its creation. If you want to finally have an answer to this seemingly never-ending controversy, then keep on reading.
Who are Harry and Meghan?
Before diving into their documentary, it’s important to first understand who this illustrious couple is. Prince Harry is the son of the late Princess Diana, recently crowned King Charles III, and younger brother to the heir of the Crown, Prince William. He was a part of the Royal family for his entire life until he married former American actress Meghan Markle. The unsuspecting pair fell in love in July of 2016 and have remained inseparable since then. Of course, there was major controversy coming from both the United States and the United Kingdom (mostly the UK). The controversy mainly sprouted from the fact that 1) Meghan was American, 2) She was a divorcee, 3) She was Harry’s senior by 3 years, and, most prominently, 4) She was biracial with a divorced Black mother and white father. She seemed to be the epitome of what the Royal family and the United Kingdom wouldn’t want for a wife to their prince. Defying the massive criticism that was thrown at them, the pair eventually got married at St. George’s Chapel on the grounds of Windsor Castle on May 19, 2018. However, the barbaric trolls and insults continued even after, and worsened. These verbal abuses from both the media and apparently the Royal family were mainly directed towards Meghan and it seemed to be that the Duchess of Sussex simply could not endure it any longer, resulting in their exit from the Royal Family, commonly referred to as the “Megxit.” Ever since then, they have moved from place to place, trying to escape the paparazzi frenzy, and had finally settled on Vancouver, Canada, until paparazzi drove them to their current residence of California. For almost two years, the couple had remained surprisingly quiet, requesting for “privacy and peace.” Well, that was until they seemingly answered all the burning questions that the world had for them in their fiery Netflix documentary: “Harry & Meghan.”
What about this Documentary is SO Controversial?
Now, you might be wondering what about a simple documentary tore the Internet into pieces. Well, this wasn’t just any documentary – this was an account of not only the abuses that Harry and Meghan suffered from the media, but also the abuse directly perpetrated by the Royal family. Throughout the sit-down interviews that constituted the majority of the documentary, the couple revealed the struggles they had with and the hate they had to endure from Kate, William, Charles, and the late Queen Elizabeth. Though there is no way to completely validate the statements that Harry and Meghan made, they irreparably damaged the reputation and public persona of the listed members, especially those of Charles (the present king) and William (the heir to the throne). Not only this but virtually everyone in America and the UK had their own perspective of “what happened” between the Royal family and the Sussex couple. Thus, a majority of what Harry and Meghan said contradicted the beliefs of numerous supporters of the Crown, resulting in savage trolls and outrage against the couple.
So, is the Documentary Truthful?
It unfortunately cannot be said for certain if the statements that Harry and Meghan made in their documentary were entirely true, partially true, or utterly false. However, their motive to come out in the open and publicly share “their side of the story” can be inferred. They decided to release this documentary two years after their infamous exit, that too perfectly timed after the death of Queen Elizabeth. Why? I wouldn’t say that they did this entirely to regain their popularity, however, it is highly possible that they did this not just to simply share “a glimpse into their private life” but to prove to the world their innocence in the “royal scandal” without the presence of the Queen, who was the center of all of it. Were they able to accomplish their goal? Well, as can be seen in the virtual aftermath of their documentary release, evidently not.
