Just a few months ago, the Mountain Lakes Volunteer Fire Department celebrated its 100th year anniversary.

In 1916, Mountain Lakes firefighters began their jobs protecting not only Mountain Lakes residents, but also people from neighboring towns such as Montville, Parsippany and Denville. Every year since then, the Mountain Lakes Fire Department has been there, waiting on calls 24/7 in case of an emergency to protect the citizens of Morris County.

Fifty years after its establishment, the Mountain Fire Department launched a junior volunteer fire department, through which high school juniors and seniors can serve the community. Several students from our high school serve as firefighters, including senior volunteers from left to right: Jake Muilenberg, Reid Goodbar, Daud Shad, Ronnie Kushkuley, Nick Jones, and Shawn McLaughlin.
The junior department responds to calls with the other members, trains biweekly, attends meetings, all of which total to over five thousand hours annually. Although fire department involvement entails substantial commitment, it is undoubtedly a worthwhile engagement. Volunteering as a firefighter is a fantastic opportunity for those interested in firefighting and public safety and is a great way to give back to Mountain Lakes and surrounding towns. Currently in need of dedicated volunteers, the volunteer fire department encourages juniors and seniors to consider joining.

Knox-Box Program

With regard to the Mountain Lakes Fire Department and for your own safety, please consider joining the Knox-Box program.

When firefighters respond to calls for structure fires and/or other emergencies, they find it difficult to enter locked houses. In order to save precious time for our brave firefighters, this program allows them to enter an identification code into a secured box for a spare key. Nationally recognized and used by over 11,000 US fire departments, this system allows firefighters quick and easy access into your home in the case of an emergency.

To join this program, please email knoxbox@mlvfd.com to get your own Knox-Box, which can be easily installed. Remember, this benefits you and the fire department, so order this highly recommended system.
