In the past decade, the desire to care for and preserve the environment has increased exponentially. Many people, especially young individuals, are beginning to take a stand against issues such as mass deforestation and very high carbon dioxide emissions. One specific issue, that has not received nearly enough attention is water conservation. This is rather unfortunate since it is an issue that any common person can heavily impact. CO2 emissions and deforestation, on the other hand, require global changes, and actions taken by several governments of multiple countries. Understanding these circumstances, I have decided to see what I myself can do to have an impact on this issue.

As a result of this, I discovered the Mountain Lakes Green Team. Their purpose is to work together with various groups of people in order to evaluate, and improve the environmental state in Mountain Lakes. Our borough participates in a program known as Sustainable Jersey. Within this program, towns in New Jersey implement actions that lead to cleaner and better environments. Each town then receives a certification based on how effectively they were able to implement these required actions. Amongst these towns, Mountain Lakes is silver certified which is a very impressive achievement.

As a participant in this program, my goal is to educate the students and staff of MLHS about methods of reducing water consumption. I will be providing weekly information about what anyone can do to reduce water consumption, and the statistics behind the impact it will have.
