In the wee hours of Friday morning, thousands gathered as close as they possibly could to the west face of the capitol building. The anticipation was high, as many were eager and excited for the new administration.
Meanwhile, just blocks away, protesters blocked the streets around the inauguration. Thousands more marched across America to protest Donald Trump.
Still, others continue to praise Donald Trump as he has broken the system and pledges to bring the power back to the people.
Saturday morning, an estimated crowd of 500,000 participated in the women’s march in Washington, DC, with many more in over 300 locations across the globe, including Paris, London, Sydney, and New York.
In other news, Dylann Roof, the man who shot and killed several members of a church during a bible study, said that he would do it again if he could.
So amongst so much division, how will we move forward? What should we be doing?
We have no choice but to work together. We have to unite. Whether Republican, Democrat or Independent, we must all work together. We must continue to speak to one another and respect each other in order to move forward and create a better America for all.
This election cycle has encouraged Americans to speak up and have their voices heard. Now is the time for us to all work together to take action in a positive fashion.
Although offensive language was directed towards many groups during the campaign, this cannot be the focus for the next four years. America has many issues to solve without the time to put them aside. These issues, such as protecting and or fixing a healthcare system, an immigration plan, and abortion rights, need to be addressed immediately as tensions have risen to an all-time high. Government officials must decide on what is best for this great nation.
However, we as citizens have the responsibility to keep our elected governmental officials and representatives accountable. We must make phone calls, write letters, send emails, and spread our message if we believe something is wrong or unjust.
Together, we must find common ground on these issues that divide us. Instead of looking for ways to divide us, we must search for ways to unite us. Often, it is overlooked and or assumed that we will continued to be divided if we do not agree. But now is the time to change! Now is the time to get along! Now is the time for love and compassion and not hate. We must not stand up for hate, but instead stand up for love. We must use love as a way to unite as all.
President Kennedy once said “There are risks and costs to a program of action. But they are far less than the long range risks and costs of comfortable inaction.” Most of all, we cannot sit still.
America has a lot of potential. We just need to be willing to realize it.
